Rouge Elea

Rouge Elea began its journey in 2003 in the field of circus, and over the years has gradually hybridised its language with dance, music and the spoken word. The company draws much of its material from an ongoing process of fieldwork, encounters and sound recordings, and builds dramaturgies that connect the stage gesture with territories, memories and people.

Based in the Basque Country since 2014, Rouge Elea works with a cross-border artistic team and a form of writing shaped by several languages. It regularly creates performances for public space, with a particular predilection for trees, natural landscapes and those open places where everyday reality can be transformed into a scenic experience.

The performances of Rouge Elea explore a poetics situated at the crossroads of aerial circus, dance, music and objects. The company investigates diverse artistic forms with the intention of questioning the world and the human being in all their complexity. Thus, pieces such as Calao approached freedom through aerial circus and live music; À la poursuite du vent, inspired by women’s testimonies, evoked an idea of freedom in the feminine; Biutz delved into the question of borders through real materials collected in Ceuta and Morocco, with visual collaboration by Zazpi T’erdi; Ronde addressed relationships between brothers and sisters through the body, circus, live music and the words of interviewed children; and in Zuek and Aquest és el color dels meus somnis, a body of work on family memory was opened and closed, ranging from an intimate cine-concert to a large-format stage journey about ancestors and memory.

Lurruna

The company now arrives at El Canal with Lurruna, a piece of dance, suspension and music for public space. The title means “vapour” in Basque: warm air that rises and disappears, transformed here into a poetic metaphor for the fleeting and elusive nature of life.

The piece begins with a conversation with someone who is not there. From this starting point, Lurruna proposes a gaze towards the landscape, towards the other side of the line, and towards the intimacy of a neighbourhood, of an encounter between individuals, of a place that connects us. The scenic work places bodies in an in-between space: between the ground and the trails of planes in the sky, between a ring road and a wasteland, between the you and the we. Through movement and a dance in near weightlessness, the piece seeks to alter perception and shift the spectator’s gaze.

Open rehearsal of ‘Lurruna’ April 17th (EKO) at 19:00

Co-written by Corine Cella and Ander Fernandez, with the support of Laurent Gauthier in the research on suspension and rigging, Lurruna unfolds outdoors, preferably in a wooded setting —a square, a park or a garden— and is structured in two parts. The first is anchored in the tangible reality of the place and opens questions about the immensity of the universe, the sublime and the smallness of our existence. The second invites the audience into a space of dialogue and collective interaction: are we here together for the same reasons? Do we share similar doubts, desires or intuitions?

The residency at El Canal is part of the final stage in the creation of the first version of the performance. During this process, the company will work mainly outdoors and will use the residency to test ideas for interaction with the audience.
