The renovation is expected to take around four months and represents an investment of nearly €165,900, financed by the Salt Town Council with support from the Girona Provincial Council and the Government of Catalonia.
The Salt Town Council has recently begun renovation works on one of the floors of the building that artist Marta Font bequeathed in 2012, stipulating that it be used for cultural purposes. The refurbishment of the second floor will transform it into a residential space for artists from companies in residence at the El Canal Performing Arts Centre while they develop their shows.
The first phase of works, carried out by the awarded contractor Absolute Properties Real Estate for an amount of €165,897.33, involves merging the existing flats on the upper level into a single spacious dwelling of 132.58 square metres. This new space will accommodate up to ten artists undertaking a residency at the El Canal Performing Arts Creation Centre. The layout includes a large communal area where artists can live together, share experiences, and generate synergies, as well as multiple bedrooms for residents’ rest.
In the initial days, the works have focused on demolishing much of the internal walls to create this vast communal area for artist life, and all installations are set to be upgraded.
“We are pleased that the renovation of this building, gifted by Marta Font, has finally begun. It marks the first step towards fulfilling her wishes: that it serve a cultural and useful purpose for the town,” said Salt’s mayor, Jordi Viñas.
Similarly, El Canal’s director, Xavier Díaz, highlighted that “having on‑site accommodation for resident artists represents another enhancement of the services we offer as a Performing Arts Creation Centre. It will allow national and international talent to get to know the municipality and the Girona region better, and engage with local social and cultural stakeholders, bringing positive returns to Salt, Girona, and the surrounding areas.”
The renovation works are financed by the Girona Provincial Council, with support from the Government of Catalonia, and the Salt Town Council itself. This new accommodation service at El Canal is expected to be operational between late this year and early 2026.
