Yesterday, Wednesday 20 December, the delivery of the XIV Zirkòlika Circus Awards of Catalonia took place. The show ‘H’ by the company La Córcoles, a piece co-produced by El Canal, won the best street circus show. Córcoles has been awarded for combining the circus with dance and theater, creating an honest and simple work, and for being an artist who has a long artistic path behind her in which she has tried different artistic disciplines such as vertical dance until excelling as a tightrope walker with this show. The company was part of the resident companies in El Canal during the course 2022 – 2023.
The company La Córcoles is Mariona Moya, an artist specialized in balancing on a tightrope since 2009, the year the company was created. After a twelve-year career as an artist specializing in this discipline, with a very personal stamp, La Córcoles stands out for its treatment and its way of understanding the body in the element of the cable and in the balancing discipline itself. The purpose of the artist is always the search for movement on cable and treats the discipline from movement and dance, understanding this place, the cable, as another space to inhabit and transit, seeking to open new paths along this line. In addition, the artist bets on poetic language without ceasing to take risks and evolve in circus figures.
With more than 600 people attending the circus sector, the awards ceremony was held at the Raluy Historical Circus and offered a show for all audiences with the performances of the artists awarded in the last edition. This year’s awards have nominated a total of 25 shows and 5 circus training and projection initiatives and have awarded 11 awards among the different Award categories.
The jury of this year’s Zirkòlika Awards was made up of thirty artists, professionals and specialists from the circus world. This year, the Awards received a total of 102 nominations for 11 different awards that value the different formats and styles of doing circus today, as well as giving recognition to training projects, social circus and the projection of the circus.
