Mal Pelo
Mal Pelo, with artistic co-direction by Pep Ramis and María Muñoz, is a stage creation group characterized by shared authorship that has resulted in more than 30 shows to date. Since 1989, Mal Pelo has developed its own artistic language through movement and the creation of dramaturgies that include text, original soundtracks, live music, the construction of scenographic spaces, light and video among other scenic tools.
María Muñoz and Pep Ramis have found in the stage and the creation of shows, a place to deposit the need to experiment, question and share the themes that are vital in their trajectory.
Shared creation is one of the differentiating and characteristic elements of the group. Throughout his career, Mal Pelo has been able to collaborate with different artists and projects such as John Berger, Erri de Luca, Lisa Nelson, Àngels Margarit, Steve Noble, Nuria Font, Steve Paxton, Eduard Fernández, Andrés Corchero, Toni Serra, Lilo Baur, Cesc Gelabert, Faustin Linyekula, Raffaella Giordano, Baro D’Evel, Leonor Leal, Marta Izquierdo among many others.
“A constant laboratory on ellipsis, subtraction, absence, waiting, fundamentally underpin the entire poetic parable of Mal Pelo: his pieces are nights in vigil, vigils of something, fragile conjurations of a presence, immobile hunts.”
“Values have nothing to do with our acquisitions, overcomings, conquests, possessions. Our only truth is the flaw. Our history is made of timelessness. Value is only the scar left by our losses. And because the essence of life is failure, whoever said that in defeat there is a dignity that triumph will never know will be right. Mountains are, deep down, nothing but scars of a planet that has lived.” Roberto Frattini on Mal Pelo
The company’s trajectory has received several recognitions, including the National Culture Award of Catalonia, the City of Barcelona Award and the National Culture Award for its trajectory both in the field of choreographic creation and in opening new paths in contemporary dance. In 2022, Mal Pelo received the Gold Medal of the Academy of Performing Arts and the 2022 City of Palma Margaluz Award for Performing Arts.
Mal Pelo is the driving force and resident of the creation space L’animal a l’esquena, a creation center located in Mas Espolla de Celrà and which is based on exchange and residencies with artists and creators. This space, surrounded by forests, farmland, olive trees and vineyards, is the crucible for Mal Pelo’s curiosity, inspiration and enrichment thanks to the constant migration of creators and the synergies it generates.
WE Nosaltres i els temps
Residence April 2025
Mal Pelo works with the idea of creating an ecosystem where performers can feel encouraged to share their personal language and, at the same time, learn from other performer-creators who accompany them in the creative process.
Transmission is a basic and essential tool in the development of dance itself. Knowledge, techniques, aesthetics, values and perspectives on the stage, questions about the body and its representations are parameters that have evolved in the history of dance largely due to the intergenerational coexistence between choreographers, performers and creators.
We are interested in sharing our experience and for it to be translated and incorporated by other bodies and other ways of living and inhabiting it. At the same time, the need and passion for meeting new generations of creators who are finishing their training persist.
Transmission does not occur in one direction, it is always lived in both directions.
The creation process will take place between June 2024 and April 2025 and will premiere at the Mercat de les Flors, Barcelona.
