Inestable

Residence February 2025

INESTABLE speaks of identity in a broader and social sense; a notion of identity imposed on the individual by certain established canons. It speaks of the human aspiration to be like everyone else, of the desire to join the group, to be part of a collective identity and also to integrate ourselves into the norm. The piece seeks to process this identity from a point of view that is sometimes deep and sometimes superficial, in order to contrast who we really are with what it means to put on our public mask, our image in the virtual world.

The show focuses on the tension between the virtual world of social networks and everyday reality, often devoid of artifice. This dichotomy raises a reflection on the image we project to the world and the one we hide: the apparent happiness we show on the networks in contrast to the insecurities and negativities that we keep secret. It criticizes how social media has become a stage for superficial positivity, with millions of identical images – selfies, seemingly spontaneous smiles and paradisiacal landscapes – that seek social recognition through exaggerated reactions. These dynamics feed an addiction to ‘likes’ and comments, which often hide the emptiness of the contemporary world. In contrast, the show claims a raw, imperfect and tangible reality, where the body becomes a vehicle for sincerity. While words and expressions can be faked, the body, with its imperfections and vulnerabilities, reveals an essential truth that challenges the superficiality of the virtual world.
