Joan Català

Joan Català Carrasco (Barcelona, 1978), restless and curious about the plastic arts, is interested in movement where the body and objects are the communicators. He understands the stage as a space for dialogue between the human, the object and the environment, where play and work are mixed with the tools, experiences and ideas that each one wants to contribute.

He started in the visual arts in 1994 at the Llotja, School of Applied Arts and Artistic Crafts and went through different circus schools, such as Carampa in Madrid, Rogelio Rivel in Barcelona and the National Circus School in Moscow to specialize himself in the work of acrobatic lifts and balances. Català is also trained in contemporary dance, gesture theater and clowning, working with several international pedagogues such as María Muñoz and Pep Ramis (Malpelo), Michel Dellaire, Iñaki Azpillaga, Thomas Hauert, David Zambrano, among others.

In 2012 he began to develop his particular vision of performing arts designed for the street and urban landscapes with the show Pelat, premiered at the Fira Tàrrega in 2013, still being programmed internationally during the 2019-2020 season. In 2016 Menar premiered at Fira Tàrrega, a piece created together with Roser Tutusaus and designed for the street and urban landscapes. Today, he collaborates as an external observer for several companies where the main engine is the Movement Arts.

Idiòfona

Residency May 2023

Idiòfona is an attempt to lighten the harshness, to find harmony in the midst of the noise, to build a common vibration. But above all, an ode to the pleasure of sharing. Idiófona is a dialogue between man and matter during which a large sound installation is built in the public space with the participation of the audience.

Unless you are a musician or have studied the subject, you may not know what an idiophone is. Idiophones are those musical instruments that produce sound from the vibration, but not from the vibrations of the strings, but from the entire body and matter of the object. Based on this concept, and with the intention of bringing together the ideas of community, material and space, Joan Català brings a proposal that invites a group of spectators chosen at random to give it a hand.

Idiòfona is the metallic-poetic odyssey of a character with an set destiny. A seeker born running away from an imposed path. Idiòfona is his betrayal of tradition in order to forge a new one. His own.
