Circus company “eia”

Circus Company “eia” began its journey in May 2009 through the union of several artists coming from backgrounds such as Cirque Vague, Circo de la Sombra, Le Grand Osim Orchestra and Celso y Frana. From the very beginning, the company has held to the same intention: to create a form of circus that places the importance of human relationships at its core. With sixteen years of collective experience, six creations and more than 800 performances in 25 countries, “eia” has established itself as one of the leading companies in contemporary circus in Catalonia, Spain and Europe.

Throughout this journey, the company has created shows such as CAPAS, inTarsi, Espera, La Pranza!, NUYE and La Piedra de Madera, works that have made visible a very clear artistic line: a human, relational and choral circus, capable of exploring the complexity of bonds, differences and coexistence. At the same time, “eia” has expanded its work towards transmission and the exchange of knowledge, accompanying emerging companies and artists and also taking on direction and mentoring roles.

The company’s trajectory has been recognised with awards such as the Premi Ciutat de Barcelona 2011 for the risks taken in circus research and innovation, the Premi Zirkòlika 2012 for Best Indoor Circus Show for CAPAS, the Max Award 2017 for Best Breakthrough Show for inTarsi, the Critics’ Award 2017 for Best Street Show for Espera, the Festival TAC Award 2021 also for Espera, and the Premi Zirkòlika 2022 for Best Indoor Circus Show for NUYE.

Secrets

Residency June 2026

Now the company arrives at El Canal with Secrets, a new contemporary indoor circus creation for five acrobats, scheduled to premiere in July 2026. The project stems from the desire to question the passage of time and the transformations it brings about, both in the artistic and professional sphere and in life itself, in the midst of a context of constant change, crisis and the need to rethink how we relate to the world and to one another. The question running through the piece is as simple as it is powerful: what would we ask of our last shooting star?

Faithful to its way of working, “eia” once again places human relationships at the centre of creation. With Secrets, they seek to give visibility to what we often hide and to value fragilities, care, bodily changes and the different ways each person moves through time. The piece articulates a reflection on communication between people, the tension between incomunicability and care, and the need for a collective and altruistic approach in the face of a society that is increasingly individualistic and impersonal.

Formally, Secrets unfolds an acrobatic, choreographic and scenographic research process deeply linked to transformation. The project integrates aerial and acrobatic disciplines, works with the subject-object relationship as one of the pillars of its stage writing, and proposes a living scenography capable of functioning as another character. It also investigates the transformation of the body over time, the complicity between artists, and a powerful yet sensitive physical language capable of revealing —or not— the secrets at play.

Another outstanding aspect of the project is its mediation dimension with audiences of different ages. The creation dossier includes activities with older people, teenagers and other groups, with a double aim: to share the core ideas of the creation and to be nourished by what emerges from these encounters, but also to connect the work with people who do not usually have a direct relationship with the artistic community. This openness to audiences is a structural part of the Secrets process, both in the form of laboratories and meetings and through open presentations and previews.

The residency at El Canal will take place from 1 to 6 June 2026 and corresponds to a technical residency in the final stage of creation, especially focused on lighting, sound and music. After this stage, the project will continue its path with new residencies at L’Artesà, Arts Printing House in Vilnius and Riga Cirks, in the final stretch before the premiere.
