Escola de Música Moderna de Girona
The Escola de Música Moderna de Girona, as well as La Moderna de Calonge, is managed by Girona Artelier SCCL, a Girona work cooperative made up of specialist music teachers. The cooperative is driven by commitment to the local territory and looks after the quality of artistic training as well as the impact and social return they can bring wherever they develop their activity. They are attentive to the demands and needs of the territory and that is why they have thought it necessary to take a step forward and lead training in the field of musicals, thus uniting education and the creation of new audiences. Its aim is to highlight the genre of musical theater as a multidisciplinary performing art and promote its recognition.
This is how the Musical Workshop was born, which takes place during the school year at the Coma Cros de Salt Cultural Factory. In the 2014-2015 academic year, they began offering comprehensive singing, dance and theater training at La Moderna and in 2016 they created their first musical educational show entitled On Blue. Since then, they have continued to do other shows and various workshops around the musical for four editions: in 2018 with the show A Bit of Broadway they premiered at the Teatre Municipal de Girona, during the 2018-2019 academic year they held a Workshop of Musicals that led to the premiere of Dones El Musical at El Canal and at the Teatre Municipal de Girona. Finally, in the 2019-2020 academic year, work began on the musical Wonderland, but due to the pandemic, it had to premiere in March 2021, with performances at El Canal and the Teatre Municipal de Girona.
El despertar de la primavera
Residency April and May 2022
El Despertar de la Primavera (Spring Awakening) is the Musical Workshop proposal for the 2021-2022 school year at La Moderna de Girona. For the general rehearsals and the premiere, they had at their disposal the spaces of El Canal de Salt, where they were able to carry out the final production at stage and sound production level.
El Despertar de la Primavera is a pop-rock musical that tells the story of a group of young German teenagers in the 19th century who are experimenting with love and sex for the first time in a repressive, devout and very demanding society. The themes of the play revolve around homosexuality, gender violence, death and suicide. The story is based on the play of the same name by the German author Frank Wederkind (1891). Since its adaptation and first premiere on Broadway in 2006, the musical has managed to move audiences everywhere and is considered a cult piece, it has had several international productions, it was translated into Catalan in 2016 by David Pintó and premiered at Teatre Gaudí in Barcelona, until now arriving in Girona.
It is the longest work with more musical numbers that the students of this training program have ever performed. It contains nineteen musical numbers and twenty characters distributed among eleven performers.
