Photographic exposition: “Les mans i el cos de l’ofici”
“Les mans i el cos de l’ofici” is a photographic exhibition by the company Última vertebra, with photographers Oriol Segon Torra and Marta Ribes. The show is a complementary activity to the company’s ‘Cove’ show and the open rehearsal on Saturday 9 December. Última vertebra has been in artistic residence at El Canal this December 2023.
The dexterity and skill of an artisan’s hands are a documentary source of knowledge and wisdom and of unquestionable value. In the words of architect Juhani Pallasmaa, hands are an essential element in the history of human intelligence. The essence of character, the roots of a knowledge that express the dance of a trade.
The present exhibition is the first result of the meetings held with different basket makers from the Catalan territory in their workshops during the autumn of 2021. A collection of photographs taken by the photographers Oriol Segon Torra and Marta Ribes. An artistic and documentary look at the hand and body work of the basket maker.
The project has the collaboration of the Associació Catalana de Cistellers i Cistelleres de Catalunya and with the participation of: Joan Farré (Folgueroles), Mònica Guilera (Vilanova i la Geltrú), Tim Johnson (Vilanova i la Geltrú), Josep Mercader (Torroella de Montgrí), Cinta Subirachs and Magda Armengol; Pauma Museum (Mas de Barberans), Miguel Ángel Redón (Badalona), Roger Chinaud (Céret). With the support of the Riudellots de la Selva Town Council, the Provincial Council of Girona and the Department of Culture of the Generalitat de Catalunya.
Última vertebra is a platform created in 2019 by the artists Anna Garreta and Quim Vilagran, for the research, creation and promotion of art and culture, which has movement and the body as the backbone of its activities. A space to relate the different artistic forms with knowledge, territory and scenic creation, through different projects that articulate these elements and facilitate processes to activate, raise awareness and transform through the arts and culture.
